High-profile DMV recruit visiting Notre Dame for the first time

The Notre Dame football program added another 2025 class recruit to the visitor list for their upcoming Jan. 20 junior day. On Wednesday, Baltimore Perry Hall safety Corey Costner announced on social media he plans to make the trip to South Bend next weekend.

Fighting Irish safeties coach Chris O’Leary offered the 6-foot, 180-pound Costner on Sept. 13. At the time, Costner’s only Power Five offers were from Boston College, Minnesota, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Since starting his junior season, he has reeled in offers from North Carolina, Duke, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest.

The On3 Industry Ranking — a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services — considers Costner the No. 450 overall player, No. 22 “athlete” and No. 14 prospect in Maryland. He has an 88 three-star rating.

However, On3 rates him a four-star (90). He also checks in as the No. 217 recruit in the class, the No. 12 athlete in the country and the No. 6 player in Maryland, per On3.

Costner has reported unofficial college recruiting visits to Duke, North Carolina, Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech. His trip to South Bend will mark his first outside of the Mid-Atlantic. He told Blue & Gold on Sept. 15 that visiting Notre Dame “was a priority.”

Irish director of recruiting Chad Bowden previously mentioned to Costner was an offer candidate for several reasons.

“They said I was a great DB (defensive back),” Costner told Blue & Gold. “They need faster, quick twitch DBs that can get out of their breaks. Also, they said my grades were good.”

In 13 games as a junior, Costner had 28 tackles, 1.5 for loss and 4 pass breakups, according to MaxPreps. He also added an interception, fumble recovery, punt block and field goal block. On offense, he caught 29 passes for 709 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Notre Dame still recruiting 2025 safeties despite two previous pledges

On Monday, the Irish secured a verbal commitment from Greenwich (Conn.) Brunswick school safety Ethan Long. The 6-2, 185-pound Long is the On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 395 overall player, No. 32 safety and No. 4 prospect in Connecticut in 2025. Long’s pledge gave the Irish two safety prospects in the 2025 cycle.

Notre Dame also secured a commitment from Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange safety Ivan Taylor on Dec. 1. The 5-11, 163-pounder is a four-star that ranks as the No. 72 overall player, No. 7 safety nationally and No. 9 prospect in Florida in the On3 Industry Ranking.

Despite two safety commits, the Irish seek a third in the class. 2025 top 120 four-star prospect JaDon Blair is among the top priorities.

Long and Taylor will visit Notre Dame on Jan. 20. They are among 16 recruits with an offer from the Fighting Irish visiting next weekend. A complete list can be found on The Lou Somogyi message board.
